Show 112 - Slow Travel is Frugal Travel with Suzy May Wander
In this episode, I discuss slow travel as a way to save money on vacations (perfect for teacher summer vacations) with Suzy May Wander.

I want to use my vacation time effectively, but I tend to find that instead of going somewhere cool I just stay home because the cost of flights, hotels, eating out daily, etc. is just too much for an extended vacation. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Slow travel is the answer to using your summer vacation time to really enjoy the world around you instead of just talking about it without spending more than you normally would to live at home.

Key Ideas
A zero-based budget works for discretionary spending like travel
Create and fund a vacation category months in advance to meet your goal
Pre-planning eliminates guilt during the trip
You can use this same system for other joy-bringing expenses
Money is a tool for fulfillment—not something to hoard or fear
Bonus Tip
Here is a bonus tip I didn't get to in the episode.
Saving for a big expense requires patience. Instead of impulse buying or just swiping a credit card and hoping to pay for it later, prepare for big expenses well in advance. Saving $100 here or $50 there will allow you to get to your goal to buy a vacation or a new gizmo without the debt or the guilt. And even though it requires patience, you’ll get there before you know it.
